January 2 - The Other National Anthem and Today's Adventure

So the choice of which song to choose for today was easy, it's New Zealand's other National Anthem. God Save The Queen, which we share with the British. We only ever sing the first verse - well in my experience anyway, and that was when the Queen actually came to New Zealand.

I remember seeing her in person twice, once when I was about 5, we drove to Whangarei  and saw her plane land, she got off walked across the tarmac, waved, shook some hands, accepted some flowers, kissed some babies, and the climbed onto another plane and flew away.

The second time I saw her I was 14, all the school children in Auckland were gathered into the Ellerslie racetrack, and we saw her being driven round the course and waving. Someone threw and egg at her - it hit her, the person was arrested. Then she gave a speech and announced a 'half holiday' for everyone. So after the event was over my friends and I took our 'half holiday' and didn't go back to school. Turns out she didn't mean we got the half holiday that day - so we got another one about a month later :-) God Save The Queen!

Today's Adventure - Fire

Today Vickey, one of the teachers at my new school, and I were exploring and decided to stop for dinner, we spied Pizza Hut and decided to walk the length of the street and then if we did not find anything better we would come back and eat Pizza. Half way down the road we came across a little Italian place called 'Green Pasta' and making an assumption based on the name that it was vegetarian we went in. It wasn't vegetarian, but it did have some meat free items on the menu so we stayed and partook. Very Delicious. On leaving we found the road running with water, fire trucks parked in the lane and Pizza Hut releasing the last fumes of smoke through a hole in its roof. Apparently if we had eaten there our meal would have been interrupted.

The thing that amazed me was that while the firemen were all inside putting an end to the fire on the top floor, people were still shopping on the ground floor.

Sorry you're going to have to turn your head sideways to view this, Blogger insists on turning it sideways and I can't figure out how to make it not do that.
